Protection beyond Europe

The majority of the world's refugees flee to neighbouring countries. Most of these countries struggle to cope with the large number of refugees they host and they often do not receive adequate protection for years. Europe should play an active role in improving refugee protection in these areas.

ECRE believes that European states should help to improve the ability of these regions to support refugees through training and technical and financial assistance. Governments in these regions should be encouraged to sign up to and comply with international and regional treaties respecting the rights of those fleeing violence and persecution.
