EU developments
EU states have agreed to set up a Common European Asylum System (CEAS) by 2010. Following the Amsterdam Treaty minimum standards on specific asylum and immigration matters were drafted by the EU with a five year transitional period. Many of these standards were forced down to the lowest possible level during the decision making process. Five years on and many states have failed to incorporate the European legislation by the deadlines set and those that have are in many cases failing to implement their provisions. In some cases, implementation has led to a lowering of protection standards as states are unwilling to be seen as having more lenient asylum practices. ECRE invites all those who play a role in political decision-making to engage with ECRE to turn the tide of negativity against asylum seekers and refugees in the EU, and help ensure the EU develops fair asylum policies and that Member States respect them. If everyone works together we are convinced that we can enhance refugee protection in Europe.
