Asylum procedures

EU countries are working to create a Common Asylum System by 2010. This system should be built on shared human rights values. It must ensure that no matter where a person applies for asylum in the EU they will receive the correct decision on their claim.

ECRE believes that everyone who applies for asylum in the EU should be able to access an asylum procedure as soon as they arrive and should be supported through the process. Nobody should be returned to face persecution, so time must be given to ensure that asylum claims are properly examined. Everyone should have the right to stay until a final decision has been reached on their case. In order to receive a fair hearing they must also have the right to an interview, interpreter and legal advice.
