Position on Reception of Aslum Seekers
Date: 05-11-2001In this position paper ECRE has compiled the views of its Member Agencies with regard to how asylum seekers who arrive in Europe should be received. ECRE as a pan-European organisation is acutely aware of the wide differences between national experiences and systems of reception in northern, southern, western and eastern Europe.
It is clear that there is no one perfect model, and that the socio-economic context of each country is a major factor in determining standards of reception. However, ECRE also believes that, as European policy is harmonised, policy makers should seek to define common areas of "best practice".
This paper collects the experience of nongovernmental professionals in the field of reception for this purpose. It draws, in particular, on issues raised in response to the document: Proposal for a Council Directive laying down
