ECRE Memorandum to the JHA Council (4 and 5 June 2009)

This JHA Council meeting will bring together Member States at a critical stage in taking forward the Common European Asylum System, and against the backdrop of recent events in the Mediterranean which could threaten the international framework of refugee protection and gravely undermine respect for fundamental principles of human rights law. In its Memorandum ECRE urges Member States to take this timely opportunity to work towards fairer and more efficient asylum systems as well as to safeguard fundamental principles and freedoms that underpin the European Union.
