Majidi is from Afghanistan, and has been living as a refugee in Hungary since 2004. His family fled the fighting in their home country, and tried to find a future in Pakistan. Poverty and lack of opportunity then drove Majidi to make his way to Europe.

When he arrived in Hungary, he did not intend to stay there, thinking that there would be more opportunities in Western Europe. But he now sees his future in Hungary, where through the kindness of friends and using his linguistic skills he has a job that he enjoys.

“I like reading, and going to the cinema or dancing. It depends on the company, I don’t want to offend anyone, I can fit in.”

Summary

Zsuzsa has lived in Hungary with her husband and two sons since 1998. She now works as social worker in the same refugee camp the family lived in until they were granted residence permits.

Body

Zsuzsa came to Hungary with her husband and two children in 1998, fleeing the ethnic cleansing and chaos of the Yugoslav wars. She is ethnic Hungarian and comes from Voivodina - an autonomous region of former Yugoslavia. Her husband is half Croatian and first fled to Hungary in the early nineties to avoid conscription by the Serbian army. As refugees fleeing a general conflict situation, Zsuzsa and her family were not eligible for refugee status. They lived in the refugee camp at Békéscaba for three years and endured the uncertainty of a series of temporary residence permits before finally being granted Hungarian citizenship in 2005. Zsuzsa's own career in the refugee field began in the same camp when she was first offered the opportunity to run the kindergarten and then appointed as a social worker.

Zsuzsa was shocked by the way she and her family were welcomed as refugees in Hungary. She talks about her own experience and the changes she has been able to bring to the camp as a social worker.
