Workshop on the UN special procedures
Workshop "UN Systems and Protecting the Rights of Refugees, Asylum Seekers, IDPs and Stateless Persons", 9-10 July 2007, Lviv, Ukraine This two-day practical workshop was run for 22 representatives of NGOs from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. The main theme of the workshop was exploring effective use of UN human rights mechanisms, particularly special rapporteurs as participants at the previous advocacy conference had requested more information on using these mechanisms. The workshop was facilitated by Jan Doerfel, UK barrister, and Mara Steccazzini, human rights officer at the OHCHR, both of whom have extensive experience of working with UN special rapporteurs. The course included practical case studies and NGOs were given practical assistance in preparing their own submissions to UN special rapporteurs. Participants are also being provided with follow up support and advice on their submissions since the workshop. |
