Training on psychosocial problems

Training "How to deal with psychosocial problems", 24-25 April 2007, Minsk, Belarus

The two-day training course was organised jointly by ECRE and VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (The Dutch Council for Refugees). The trainers were Rasja Mahabier and Emöke Halászi from the training department of the Dutch Council for Refugees.

The course looked at psychosocial issues that may occur in the daily work of NGOs working with asylum seekers and refugees and how these can be negotiated, and how these can affect staff and the morale of the NGOs concerned.

This course was particularly aimed at people within NGOs who have experience of working directly with asylum seekers and refugees and with some managerial responsibility. Part of the training looked at how to support staff and employees in negotiating stressful situations.

The training covered issues including:

1. How to recognize behaviour patterns and how to react (suicide, depression, aggression, victim of sexual-or other personal persecution)
2. How to deal with psychosocial problems in the context of your own emotions
3. How to prevent burnout among your employees
