Training for border guards

Training for border guards: "International and National Standards in the Provision of Access to Asylum Procedures for Refugees in Ukraine and Moldova", 14-16 November 2007, Chernovtsy, Ukraine.

The training was co-organised by two of ECRE's project partners: Ukrainian NGO Human Rights Have No Borders and the Moldovan Helsinki Committee on Human Rights. The seminar format included one day of lectures and discussion on refugee law, one-day of role-play exercises for border officials and a day of border monitoring on the Ukrainian border with Moldova.

Dr Peter Hobbing, Former Head of Unit, "Police and Customs" at European Commission; Jan Doerfel, UK Barrister; Marina Maiyorova, IOM; Andreea Mocanu, Romanian Refugee Council as well as representatives from the UNHCR Representation in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine attended as speakers. Representatives of border guards and NGOs from Ukraine and Moldova as well as a procurator and migration service official from Moldova participated. 

Press event: the Ukrainian local border guard PR team covered the event and interviewed participants from UNHCR, NGOs and Dr Hobbing on the situation with border monitoring and refugee rights. A press release on the event was covered on the local news over the two following days after the event.
