The protection of refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants

This project is funded by the European Commission's AENEAS programme and will run from December 2005 to December 2008. The project aims to improve the implementation of national and international refugee and human rights instruments in Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine and the European territories of the Russian Federation. Through the project activities ECRE aims to increase security and protection for refugees and other vulnerable migrants in the region.

ECRE is concerned with the introduction and maintenance of fair and humane policies on the reception, protection and integration of asylum seekers, internally displaced people and refugees in wider Europe. Our partners in Belarus, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine have similar concerns for refugees, forced migrants, internally displaced people and asylum seekers in their own countries. The project aims to encourage the development of national good practice in the field of refugee protection.

The project is focused on improving access to international protection. In all four project countries, to varying degrees, vulnerable migrants face difficulties in establishing a legal status. They also have problems with the level of protection that they enjoy even after their status has been recognised. The project seeks to find ways to rectify these conditions.

Project activities include seminars, training courses for NGOs, local authorities, border guards and judges, monitoring, provision of legal advice for asylum seekers, advocacy for improved legislation and the translation and publication of training materials, legal cases and other relevant texts.
