Seminar on national security and right to asylum
Seminar "National Security and the Right to Asylum", 25-26 October 2007, Moscow, Russian Federation This event was run by ECRE together with partner organisation Memorial Human Rights Centre Migration Rights Network in Russia. Speakers included Christoph Bierwirth from UNHCR Georgia; Clara Gutteridge from Reprieve, which represent British prisoners in Guantanamo Bay; Judith Sutherland from Human Rights Watch; Jan Doerfel, UK Barrister; Femke Vogelaar from the policy department of Dutch Council of Refugees; Lanna Hollo from the Open Society Justice Initiative; and Catherine Meredith from the AIRE Centre, UK. Elena Ryabinina, Civic Assistance, from the Russian Federation and Alexander Cherkassov from Memorial Human Rights Centre gave presentations about the concerns of national security and the right to asylum in the Russian Federation. Ruslan Taratula from the Human Rights Have No Borders, Ukraine, spoke about the implications of the recent cases of refoulement of Uzbek refugees from Ukraine. About 70 participants including some state officials and NGOs from Belarus, Russia, Moldova and Ukraine attended this meeting. |
