The Joint Advanced ELENA and Leiden Institute for Immigration Law Conference on the use of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in asylum and immigration law will take place on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October. The Conference will be held in Leiden University Law School, and people will be accommodated in the Hampshire Hotel Fitland - Leiden.

ELENA (European Legal Network on Asylum) is a forum for legal practitioners who aim to promote the highest human rights standards for the treatment of refugees, asylum seekers and other persons in need of international protection in their counselling and advocacy work. The Network has been running training courses for over twenty years. The network is coordinated by the European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE). This year the conference will be hosted in conjunction with the Institute of Immigration Law of Leiden University. The Leiden Institute of Immigration Law conducts, stimulates and facilitates research in the field of immigration and asylum law. The Institute aims at disseminating better knowledge and understanding of rights and duties of both states and migrants in a world where mobility of persons is rapidly expanding.

Interested participants should register by Friday 19 September to secure a place. The conference fee is 400 EUR for NGOs and lawyers, and 500 EUR for government officials and international organisations. The fee includes one night's accommodation (24 October), meals as per the programme including a social evening on Friday 24 October, and reading materials. The fee does not include travel to the event or an evening meal on Saturday 25 October.

This year we are delighted to announce that we can offer a limited number of bursaries to potential participants. The bursaries will be funded by the European Commission under the FRAME Project that aims to promote the use of the Charter amongst legal practitioners protecting the rights of vulnerable migrants.

The bursary includes the full conference fee including accommodation on Friday 24 October, meals as per the programme and conference materials as well as 250 EUR towards the cost of your travel to the conference.

Travel costs will only be reimbursed after the conference and upon receipt of the original tickets and proof of payment. Please note that you are responsible for booking your own travel. The bursary will be awarded on a first come first served basis with preference going to applicants who explain why the course would benefit them and who would not be in a position to attend without the bursary. Unfortunately we can only offer bursaries to applicants within the EU.
